First solo trek I led, I took a wrong turn and we reached camp three hours late in the dark. At 20 I was sure I'd ruined my career. The clients tipped me and rebooked. Turns out owning the mistake mattered more than the mistake.

Lost an entire apple crop to hail one year and stood in the orchard genuinely thinking of selling the land. My father used to say the mountain takes and the mountain gives. I waited one more season. It gave.

I wanted to be a mechanical engineer. The money ran out after my father fell ill, so I took the factory job 'just for one year.' That was 1998. Life doesn't always ask what you wanted — but my boy is in college now, so maybe it wasn't a total loss.

Failed my first JEE attempt so badly I hid the score from my parents for a whole week. Took a drop year in a coaching town, cried in an unreasonable number of bathrooms, and somehow here I am in an actual college. Past me would genuinely not believe it.

Failed my first semester math

Village school never had a proper maths teacher, so diploma calculus hit me like a truck. Backlog in first sem, felt like I'd let my whole village down. Retook it, passed. Sometimes you're not slow, you just started three steps behind.

Told the whole mohalla I'd clear

First attempt I was so confident I told neighbours I'd be an officer. Now uncles ask 'kuch hua?' at every wedding. Learned to just smile. Failure in a small town has an audience you didn't invite.

Missed the mains cutoff by four marks last year. Four. I cried for a week and then realised the whole village already thinks I've 'settled abroad' because papa can't say the truth to relatives. Carrying his lie is heavier than my own failure.

Everyone in my family still thinks I 'wasted' two UPSC years. Honestly those two years taught me to sit with myself for ten hours a day, and that discipline is what pays my rent now. Not every detour is a dead end.

Dropped out of engineering to do this and my dad still tells relatives I'm 'preparing for placements'. Every time my phone rings I get a small heart attack. I'm not even sad about the degree, I'm scared of proving them right. Betting on yourself is lonely, boss.

The year the shop nearly closed

Post-GST, for eight months my shutters opened out of stubbornness, not business. I had to let go of a worker who had been with my father, and I still cannot look at his chair without guilt. Beta, failure is not the fall, it is who you become while getting back up. We survived, humbler and wiser.

Cleared prelims twice, missed mains cutoff by a margin so small it fits inside a WhatsApp forward. My relatives have stopped asking 'kya hua result'. Honestly their silence is louder than any taunt. But I have realised failing at something you chose is still more honest than succeeding at something you didn't.

Cleared prelims twice, failed mains twice by less than 3 marks. You start to feel like the exam knows your name and enjoys the joke. But mummy still packs my tiffin with the same faith. So I show up again.

Papa wanted me to crack the police bharti — sarkari naukri, settled life. I failed the physical twice and it broke something in me. But that same body that 'failed' now trains 20 clients a day. Sometimes your failure is just pointing you to the right akhara.

The day my result came, I was ready for shouting but papa just closed the shop early and got my favourite pyaaz kachori. He said failing an exam is not failing him. I think that hurt more and healed more than any lecture could have.

Four marks

Missed the prelims cutoff by four marks. Four. I've replayed those exact questions so many times they live rent-free in my skull. Still trying to believe the attempt failing isn't the same as the person failing.

Missed the cut-off by 1.5 marks last year. One and a half. I know exactly which two questions I second-guessed and I'll carry them to my grave. But I've reapplied, because quitting hurts more than one more year of trying.

I failed my first-semester maths paper and cried inside an STD booth so nobody in the hostel would see. Then I remembered my father never once failed to wake at 4am for the field, whatever the harvest. So I sat with the book again. Reappear cleared.

Two seasons the cotton failed — once flood, once no rain — and I still owe the seed shop. My son says come to the city, but this soil has my father's sweat in it. So I stay.

Failed my first merchant-navy medical over eyesight and cried the whole bus ride home. But the doctor said it's fixable, so now I'm saving for the correction instead of giving up on it.

Dropped out but not done

I stopped studies after Plus Two because home needed money, and for a while I felt like a failure every time old classmates went to college. Now I do delivery and help appa on the boat, and slowly I am saving for an ITI course. Delayed is not defeated, that is what I tell myself on the bad days.

The boy who failed my exam

One boy failed my Malayalam paper three years running and his father shouted at me at the gate. Last month that same boy, now a lorry owner, sent a driver to drop vegetables at my house with a note that said thank you mash. Marks measure one morning, mone, not a whole life.

Missed the last list by 1.5 marks. Cried in the Meenakshi temple corridor, came home, and opened the same Indian Polity book at page one. What else to do, no?
