Watched the match in a Bengaluru sports bar full of strangers and for two hours we were one loud family. Back in Pauri the whole mohalla crowded around one TV — different setup, same heart attack every over.

My whole shift quietly schedules its tea breaks around the match. The supervisor pretends not to notice, mainly because he's watching it on his own phone in the office. Cricket is the one thing that makes all of us equal for a few overs.

Everyone worships the young batters who clear the ropes, but I keep telling my nephew — just watch how Dravid used to leave the ball outside off. Patience was itself a shot. Half these T20 boys wouldn't survive one wet morning at Eden Gardens.

Shop TV, ten men, one match

During India matches my repair shop becomes the mohalla theatre. Nobody buys anything, everyone drinks my chai, and somehow that's good for business next week. Cricket is the only thing that makes strangers into brothers here.

Bhaiyya jab last over mein 18 chahiye the, meri poori workshop ne machine band kar di aur phone pe match dekhne lag gaye. Boss (mujhe) bhi. We lost. Nobody worked for an hour anyway. Kanpur cricket ke aage kaam kaisa.

Watched the last 3 overs standing outside a shop, phone propped on my helmet, order getting cold in the bag. Customer called and I said sir 2 minute, India ko jitna hai. He laughed and said theek hai beta. Sometimes the whole city is one team.

In our village we all sat at the tube-well and watched the India match on one small phone, 15 heads together. Nobody remembers who won that day but everybody remembers the chai and the shouting. Do you young people still watch together, or all alone now?

the ground beside hostel

There's a patchy ground beside our hostel where a 'six' means hitting the mess wall, and I swear those matches feel bigger than any IPL final. Yesterday I hit the winning run and my whole floor carried me like I won the World Cup. Chak de, best feeling in the world.

The whole karkhana stops when India is batting. Boss pretends to be angry about it but he's the one shouting loudest at the screen. Yesterday we lost a wicket and honestly we all lost concentration on the stones too.

Grew up playing gully cricket on Nagpur's broken lanes, tennis ball taped till it was more tape than ball. Now I coach those same kids the same crooked cover drive. IPL's flashy, but nothing beats a Sunday match where the loser buys the chai.

Watched the whole match on my phone hiding from my TL, and RCB broke my heart again like it's their KPI. 'Ee sala cup namde' has officially become a personality disorder in my PG room.

Sunday box cricket with the office boys is the only cardio I get and my knees have filed a complaint. Batting order was decided by who bought coffee, which is peak startup governance. We lost, but the post-match neer dosa made it worth it.

My auto has a small radio and during India matches it becomes a moving commentary box. Passengers forget the fare argument and ask 'anna, score enna?'. Cricket makes strangers into friends for 20 minutes.

Watched the whole match standing in the office pantry because the one guy with the HDMI cable controls the TV like it's his ancestral property. CSK lost anyway, so at least my legs suffered for a reason.
