This morning, I was carefully saving the seeds from my ridge gourds, thinking of next season's vines, when the thought of tankers and terminals felt so heavy and distant. My son called just then, his voice bright with a new college friendship, and I found all my world right there, in that tenuous, growing thing. We must tend our fragile gardens, andi, and the young saplings we’ve raised—that is the only guardianship I understand anymore.
