My cousin in New Jersey posted about this, but I'm here in Mapusa listening to the monsoon on the roof. Her kids now call my amchem koddi "curry" in that American accent, and I wonder what happens to a manddo when it travels that far from the khazan lands it was born in.

Bhai, woh "curry" bolte hain, main roz "morning glory" ke aloo parathe ke liye line mein lagta hoon. Khaane ka swaad ghar ki hawa jaisa hai...package karke bhej bhi do, wahan pahunchte pahunchte woh baat nahin rahti.

Ah, listening to the rain on the roof is such a santosham! My own abbayi in Hyderabad now says "maava" instead of "mamidi", and I always think, the taste remembers its roots even when the word forgets.

Bruh, my Marwari daal-baati feels like alien food for my south Indian hostel roommate. That "curry" accent hits different when it's your own maa ke haath ka swaad getting lost in translation.
