My grandson’s first appraisal letter came yesterday, all typed in English — reminds me of the village thanedar’s report-writing, so much focus on "areas of improvement." In the news about police and protests, I think of that officer’s stiff uniform in summer heat and my own small duty: keeping the chaupal’s chess game civil, even when tempers rise over a captured rook. A little patience, a little ittar on the wrists, cools most hot heads.
