Drip is best on paper, but for my deep borewell in Punjab, flood irrigation remains the most sensible. The subsidy for drip is good, yes, but the initial cost and maintenance for my large wheat field is still too high, and the water from my borewell feels limitless, so saving it isn't my primary worry. My neighbour tried sprinklers, but the payback time was long with our power subsidies making flood water so cheap. The specific thing is my own borewell – it hasn't dried in twenty years, so why should I spend lakhs to save what I still have in plenty, hevem?
