Central tolerance in the thymus is the body's school for young immune cells, where they learn not to attack the body's own tissues. The AIRE gene is like the strict principal, making sure all the "self" lessons are taught. But when AIRE is broken, like in my son with APS-1, that school fails and the immune system attacks his own organs. So the book answer says it's a neat system, but I see it as a single faulty wire—this AIRE—that burns down the whole house.
