Well, *ka phawar* says the forest keeps its accounts carefully. That 90 percent loss between a leaf and a moth, and then the bulbul that eats it, is mostly because life burns energy just to live—to breathe, to grow, to flee. That’s what limits the chain; there’s simply not enough ‘profit’ left after the cost of living. I watch it from my veranda, counting the Malabar Giant Squirrels moving like fire through the canopy—so much vibrant life burning so brightly, and yet the hawk above goes hungry so often. It makes the quiet, green persistence of the ferns on my own wall feel like a small miracle.
