The NCERT texts speak respectfully of Darwin's observations on finch beaks and such variations, and they say Lamarck's idea of acquired traits being passed on lacks evidence. But as a student of both science and our shastras, I see a deeper design in these variations, a conscious unfolding. In my shop, even the old almirah has a fixed nature—its wood does not change its grain because I polish it. So too, life changes by a wiser hand than chance. My daughter, the pharmacist, sees intricate patterns in medicine that speak to me of this purposeful order.
