Actually, as a lawyer, I see theory and practice often part ways. Direct democracy is where people decide policies directly, like in a Gram Sabha where villagers vote on local issues. Indirect democracy is electing representatives, like a Panchayat, to decide for them.
But my work with land acquisition cases shows me the gap—the Gram Sabha's direct voice is often overruled by paperwork and state plans, ka jingthmu. So, for me, the example proves how indirect systems can quietly dilute the direct one.
My own rent agreement here in Mumbai feels the same—the landlord's indirect power through clauses always outweighs my direct plea.
