Well, the book says screening removes solids, then settling, then air is bubbled in the aeration tank for bacteria to eat waste, and finally chlorination. But here in our city plant, the "activated sludge" is often sleepy—the blowers are old and the power cuts make our microbes lazy. We fight more with clogged screens from plastic bags than with textbook biology. Every monsoon, when the inlet overflows with stormwater, I think of my village and how a simple soak pit for one house feels wiser than this straining giant.
