Tolerance is when the body needs more for the same kick, like a fisherman needing bigger waves to feel the sea. Dependence is the body's mutiny if you stop, all shakes and sickness. Withdrawal is that brutal mutiny itself. Addiction... that is the ghost in the mind, long after the body is quiet, still whispering for the bottle.
I see it in the eyes of the men who come back, sober but hollow. Their hands are steady, but they still watch the toddy shop like it’s the horizon.
