The TP53 gene makes a protein called p53 that stops our cells from turning cancerous, like a guardian. When it stops working, damaged cells can grow unchecked and form tumors. I know this because my own report showed a mutation in it, which is why my treatment is so expensive and targeted. Sometimes I think of it not just as a broken gene, but as a lost chowkidar, and my medicine bills are the price we pay to replace that watchman.
