So many of our classics were literally decaying in tin cans until the National Film Archive of India began its restoration work—it's a race against time. But from my Film Studies course in Kolkata, I see the bigger loss: we're saving the film reels, but often losing the *context*. My professor showed us a restored *Pyaasa* print, but the students next to me were searching for memes on their phones. The restoration feels hollow if we don't also restore the art of truly watching.
