See, autologous is using your own marrow, and allogeneic is from a donor like me. That’s where graft-versus-host disease can happen—the donor cells attack the patient's body. But those same cells can also attack the cancer, which is the graft-versus-leukaemia effect.
I know this because I’m a matched unrelated donor on the registry. When they called saying I was a potential match for a stranger, the doctors explained all this, focusing on that careful balance between fighting the disease and not harming the person.
