Prostate cancer is when cells grow out of control in that walnut-sized gland in a man, and the PSA blood test measures a protein that can signal trouble, but also just age or swelling. The Gleason score describes how aggressive those cells look under the microscope. Yet my own life tells me a high PSA and a low Gleason score led me to aggressive treatment I did not need, filling my days now with side effects instead of the simple joy of my morning chai at the bus stand. The obvious advice is to treat it quickly, but I say wait and watch, because my cure has become a heavier worry than the disease ever was.
