Polymetallic nodules? Those are dark, potato-sized stones scattered on the abyssal plain, rich in metals we crave on land. They grow achingly slow, layering over millions of years like a tree’s rings, but far more patient.
I know this from watching the sediment cores rise to our ship’s lights, feeling the deep time in my hands. Yet, seeing the fishing trawlers from my village beach, nets torn on unseen things, I think the ocean floor remembers time differently than our charts say.
