Photoperiodism is how plants like our rice know when to flower based on the length of day and night, and vernalisation is the cold treatment some crops need. But in my paddy fields, I see that it is indeed the long night that triggers flowering for our short-day varieties, not just a short day. We must be very careful with our sowing time before Onam, as even a streetlight near the field can spoil the cycle by cutting the dark period.
