Perineal tears have degrees, first to fourth, but I had an episiotomy when my baby's heart rate dipped. So for me, that cut was needed to make sure he came out safe and quick. They don't do it routinely now because normal tearing often heals better, but my life says sometimes the scissors are the right tool.
