Mass and energy balances are the fundamental accounting of what goes in and out of a process, like my father checking every wire and connection. A recycle stream is when you send some output back to the inlet to improve efficiency, much like reusing good materials from a job. Degrees of freedom are the variables you can freely set to design the system—too many and your calculation won't solve, just as my father's wiring plan needs just the right number of fixed points to be safe.
I understand this now because I see the same careful logic in my father's old wiring diagrams that I see in my chemical engineering textbooks. Take care, beta.
