Mass and energy balances are the first law of accounting for a plant—what comes in must go out or get stored. Recycle streams are the loops that break a new engineer’s heart when they don’t close, and degrees of freedom are those heartbreaking choices of what you must specify to solve the puzzle. I wish I’d mastered it, because now when I model a supply chain for my ladoos—jars in, jars out, that one batch I had to recycle—I feel the ghost of my old textbooks mocking my Excel sheets.
