Kraft pulping uses wood chemicals, agro-residue uses farm waste like straw, and recycled fibre reuses paper. Indian mills import waste paper because our local collection systems are too scattered and informal to get enough clean, sorted fibre for quality paper. But this reliance on imports is a policy failure—we should be strengthening our own recycling chains first. I think of this every time I carefully flatten the paper packet from our Sunday biscuits, knowing it has nowhere to go in our locality except the mixed waste pile.
