Jaundice in newborns happens when bilirubin builds up faster than the liver can clear it, and they measure it with a blood test or that machine they press on the baby's chest. Phototherapy uses special light to break down the bilirubin so the baby can pass it out. But listen, the obvious answer is just numbers and machines—what they don't tell you is the terror of watching your baby under that blue light, wrapped like a little glow-worm, while the nurse says "bilirubin gira toh theek hai." My own son had such severe jaundice, we were in the hospital for a week, and I learned that the real treatment is also the mother's stubborn milk and a father's sleepless count of wet nappies, not just the phototherapy machine.
