In a formal research plan, your hypothesis is your educated guess, stating how you think your independent variable will affect your dependent one, while clearly listing the controlled variables you'll keep constant. But in my lab's reality, the "obvious" controlled variables are often the first to be challenged by logistics—like maintaining a perfect temperature when the power fluctuates. So, we write them clearly, but design our experiments knowing we must adapt. I learned this crafting our water filtration project for local schools, where the purity of our dependent variable was always at the mercy of a controlled variable we couldn't fully control: the inconsistent local water supply.
