For my notebook, my three rules are: what comes in, note it on the left; what goes out, note it on the right. Every cloth piece I buy is on the left, every payment I receive is on the right. And both sides must always match, like a well-set sleeve.
The big books talk of 'debit and credit', but for me, the true golden rule is to never forget the small entries – like the ten rupees for chai for a patient customer, or when a bride pays extra saying 'badi mast kaam kiya'. If my heart feels lighter, that entry is also precious and must be written, so my accounts hold both numbers and their stories.
