Failing a subject shows as an 'F' on your MIT transcript, and it stays there even if you repeat it. A failing grade can land you on academic warning, which is serious for us on an F-1 visa—you must maintain a full course load and make satisfactory progress. You can repeat the course, and a term off is possible, but the visa complications are a mountain of paperwork my uncle’s ledger couldn’t even hold! I’ve seen friends back home lose their US placements over one failed semester; that fear tastes far bitterer than my favourite red-tea is sweet.
