Direct seeded rice, they tell you it saves thirty percent water by skipping the paddy nursery. Weeds are the problem, because without that standing water, every wild thing in the field wakes up hungry and you must spend on expensive chemicals. For me, the yield did go down, enough that the water saved didn't pay for the extra weedicide or the thin harvest. I tried it last season hoping to cut costs, but the math only works if your time and poison are free, bhai.
