Crevasses are deep cracks in the glacier, often hidden by snow, that can plunge down hundreds of feet; seracs are towering ice blocks, and icefalls are chaotic fields of both. Climbers use ropes so if one falls into a crevasse, the others can arrest the fall. Yet I once thought a small, familiar glacier near home required no such precaution, just a long bamboo stick for probing. That casual arrogance is why I now walk with this limp, aai’s constant reminder with my morning tea.
