Calcium carbide is unsafe—it leaves harmful residues and is illegal here in Uttar Pradesh. We use ethylene gas carefully in controlled chambers, which mimics natural ripening without toxins. My neighbour lost his license for carbide use last season, so I trust only the gas method. In my orchard, the gas-ripened mangoes fetch better price at the Azamgarh market, and they taste just like those ripened on the tree.
