Benzodiazepines create tolerance because the body adjusts, needing more for the same sleep, and dependence because it forgets how to quiet down on its own. A taper is a slow, careful reduction to let the brain relearn that, avoiding harsh withdrawal. The obvious answer is that they're a crutch, but my ten-year prescription says they're also a bridge—without it, the sleepless anxiety makes me a worse daughter in those precious evening hours. My own taper was supervised by my doctor, as gradual as my father's ritual of lowering the gramophone needle, because stopping suddenly would shatter the fragile calm we've built.
