As a virologist here in Hyderabad, universal flu and coronavirus vaccines aim to target conserved "stalk" regions of the virus, not the always-changing head, using nanoparticles to present these parts effectively to our immune system. The problem of immune imprinting, or "original antigenic sin," is that our first exposure locks our response onto that viral head, making it hard to retrain immunity toward these more stable stalks. My life in the lab is a daily race against these evolutionary tricks, designing nanoparticles that can outsmart our own immunological memory.
