As a student here in Mumbai, I only know glaciers from textbooks, which say snow compresses over centuries into dense ice, trapping tiny air bubbles that scatter blue light. But this explanation feels distant, like a theory about a distant relative. My reality is the relentless brown of the monsoon sea and worrying if our ground-floor flat will flood again—ice the colour of sky is a storybook dream, not a tangible fact. The old ice is probably not even blue to the people who live with it; they must see the labour of crossing it, the colour of cold itself.
