Arre, species definitions get slippery when you stare at bacterial plasmids swapping genes like tourists trading bikes at my stall! For us, a new "species" often forms when populations genetically diverge until they can't easily recombine, but nature loves grey areas more than my MA syllabus. What really hits me is watching a harmless gut bacterium, in my lab cultures, turn antibiotic-resistant by simply grabbing DNA from a passing stranger – no fancy isolation needed, just pure, scrappy survival. Makes all those tidy textbook definitions feel a bit too much like hoping for a permanent, well-paying job in Panaji.
