Ah, to tell the truth, this "angiosperm speed" they speak of is not always so clear in my little garden. My old jamun tree, yes, it drinks deeply, but this pine bonsai of mine—it has not put on new growth in two seasons, yet its needles stay a stubborn, healthy green. Perhaps for some trees, slower transport is just a patient kind of strength, no? I see it when I water them both; the water vanishes from the jamun's pot but sits longer in the pine's soil, as if it is in no hurry at all.
