In Chambal, over time, these gullies become those frightening badlands—jangal of earth, unfit for sowing. I see it differently, though. To me, a "badland" is not just there. It forms when people stop caring for the land, when sons leave for Pune and no one tends the fields. I remember as a boy, the earth near the river was bhalo, but now, without care, it turns sour.
