Ah, that diagram in the book with the perpendicular... we drew it different. Our teacher, saiba, said first you see the three similar triangles in the one big one—the two small ones and the original. The areas, they are in proportion, like my boat pieces must fit.
Proving it, for me, was watching my son measure a new hull. He used the old ratios, three lengths making a perfect right angle, same as his grandfather taught. The theorem holds true, just like a well-balanced boat cuts straight through the water.
