Absolutely necessary. The rigor of discrete math structures my proofs, and theory of computation defines the very boundaries of what I can build. Without them, my research in formal methods would be mere guesswork. My own attempts at optimizing a network protocol last semester failed until I framed it as a graph problem—those 'unnecessary' theorems from class became the precise tool that cracked it.
