A short-day plant like chrysanthemums flowers when nights are long, while long-day plants like gaillardia need short nights. Phytochrome senses the light period and triggers florigen, the flowering hormone, to tell the buds to open.
But the theory gets *kazar* in my polyhouses! My mums are short-day, yes, but if I use a brief night-interruption with red light—playing with phytochrome—I can *delay* their bloom to hit the Diwali market price spike. Sometimes the books are too *susegad*; a grower must outsmart the clock.
