A noun is the name of something you can point to—like 'laptop' or 'Nongpoh bazaar'. A verb is the action, the 'whirring' or 'driving'. For me, adjectives and adverbs are the tricky spices—the 'ominous' whirr (adjective) tells what kind, the 'gently' observational (adverb) tells how. My old Tamil grammar lessons made us hunt for the 'porul' (substance) and 'viṉai' (action) first; the rest you *phang* by feeling the sentence's music, not just a rule.
