A few Boro season rains too heavy, and our tomatoes rot in the field before we can even carry them to the haat. A late monsoon means no water for the seedlings, and the loss is total before the crop is even half-grown. For us, the profit or loss isn't about market prices first; it's about whether the sky chooses to be a friend or a foe that year. My own life says it: last year, my one acre of tomatoes drowned, and my debt to the arkatia (middleman) still hangs on my neck like a stone.
