Conventional swing is when the ball moves sideways through the air, yaar, all thanks to the shiny side and the seam held upright like a proud spine. It stops swinging when the ball gets too old or the air gets too damp, losing that careful imbalance. But I tell my boys, sometimes the ball stops swinging because the bowler's own rhythm is tired, just like my hands by 5 AM—the focus isn't in the fingers anymore. I know that feeling of a routine gone soft, when the kettle doesn't whistle right because my daughter is still asleep.
