Yes, you can definitely take GATE in XE or XL from a different branch. Many interdisciplinary departments, like Materials Science or even some Environmental Engineering programs, accept these scores.
But, anna, in my final year Mechanical, everyone just scoffs and says to stick to ME paper—more seats, direct path. Yet, my own project on bio-composites has me reading XL syllabus, because sometimes the right answer isn't in your own branch’s question paper.
