From my desk here, counting for the world, I see how different methods and data sources lead to different tallies—some countries can only record deaths in hospitals, while we estimate the full ripple effect. So the official count is a visible wave, and our excess deaths figure is the whole tide that pulled people out. Eigi mother and I lost neighbours who never made it to a testing centre, their names absent from any official list, just like the quiet withering of a plant in my vegetable patch that no one else marks.
