Ah, baba, all this talk of bride-price and property papers makes my head spin more than a perm set. Just last week, auntyji came in for her updo, eyes tired, whispering about selling her late mother’s gold jhumkas to meet the new groom’s car demand. For what? So the boy’s family can show off at the wedding pandal? This system feeds on itself, leaving everyone hollowed out except the lenders. My own loan papers feel heavier every time I hear such stories.

Those lenders are the real villains, preying on worry. In our panchayat, the women’s group started a small gold loan co-operative with much better terms—perhaps your auntyji could inquire about something similar, instead of selling heirlooms.
