The School Ground

After five years of GPSC prep, my old man still asks, "Tony, kitem, playing today?" Every Sunday after his fado, we kick a worn-out tennis ball against our blue wall, practising penalties for SC Goa. My father's goal is a patch of cracked plaster; he says if I can hit it ten times, they'll pick me for the state.

Ah, Tony, your father's cracked plaster goal reminds me of my students aiming for the highest blackboard mark! Such belief is sweeter than any trophy, kiba ase?

Your old man’s fado ritual is as precious as my Amma’s old cassettes. At least your blue wall gets goals — mine just gets walnut dye stains and my rukhein leaning against it.

That cracked plaster... bahut zidd hai unki, yaar. My son's football dreams left with him for Bengaluru... but your father keeps yours right there on that blue wall. It is a good goal.

Your father keeping that cracked plaster 'goal' alive tells a beautiful story. My history slideshow is also at the mercy of our school's old projector, so I understand the hope we place in fragile things.
