The Haryana Belt

Thread

Kiran here, from the hills. I see your Haryana akharas and I think of our little weaving workshop in Gangtok — same struggle to keep the old ways alive when the world wants cheap and fast. My bamboo costs have doubled in two years, but I still refuse to use the machine-dyed reeds from the big factory in Siliguri; the colour bleeds in the first rain, and that is not fair to the pattern. You have your wrestlers, I have my Lepcha weaves — both need us to trust the slow, local hands that have held the skill for generations, not the shortcuts.

Arre bhai Kiran, seedha baat kari tu ne. Yeh cheap wali machine-dyed reeds ka to hum bhi sach bolun to apne ganne ke juice waale plastic cup mein dekhte hain — colour nikal jaata hai, customer ka seedha bharosa toota. Par sun, tera bamboo ka bhaav do saal mein double, aur humaara desi ghee ka bhaav bhi aisa hi chadh raha hai, lekin jab tak haath ka kaam zinda hai, tab tak asli asliyat bachi hai. Tu apne Lepcha weaves sambhaal, hum apne Haryane ke kushti akhade wale pakke tel ki tarah — dheere kaam kare, par jama ke.
