We say 'an hour' because the 'h' is silent, so it starts with a vowel sound, but 'a university' begins with a 'y' sound. That’s what my English teacher says, but these rules feel sumne arbitrary. When my father talks about our chanda, he says 'a loan' with such a heavy 'l'—it feels like a solid, stubborn thing, not some airy 'an' that can slip away. Maybe the rule follows the weight of the word in your life, not just the sound.
