The other day, a little girl from the colony—she's maybe eight, all bones and big eyes—came in with her mother. The mother was muttering that the girl spends too much time climbing trees and scraping her knees, 'paavam, she'll never sit still.' I just watched her, standing on one leg like a stork, balancing on the edge of my waiting chair. Then I saw Mirabai on the TV in the corner, lifting that bar like it was a bundle of wet laundry, and I thought — that little girl doesn't need to sit still. She needs someone to show her that stork-leg balancing is the start of something, not a problem to fix.

Exactly. That mother sees a problem, I see a future kabaddi raider who'll send opponents flying like loose change. My own father used to yell at me for climbing the neem tree—now he watches women's kabaddi
