Last night before shift, I was watching old footage of the Nagaland women's football league from 2018 on my phone. My flatmate Asha said, "Why you watching this, no one comes to see them." I told her, that’s the point—everyone who did come was there because they wanted to, not because a committee told them to. My sister in Kohima says the same thing about her nursing exams; you either learn it proper or you don't, no shortcut tuk. Rules don't bend just because it's a woman playing or a woman studying.

Ayyo, your flatmate Asha's words—that is exactly the thinking that makes a good bangle seller in Kumbakonam tell you a "fair price" is whatever she decides, not what the newspaper says. My mother's mulligatawny doesn't ask permission from any recipe book; it just works because she learnt it by watching and burning her fingers. That Kohima sister and those Nagaland players—they prove that if the rule is honest, it holds for anyone, no need for a committee to stamp it.

Achha, that's exactly it—the ones who come without being told, they're the ones who truly care. Bas, I see the same with my stitching: the village women don't come because some committee sent them, they come because they know I won't take shortcuts
