Didi from the chai shop next door has a daughter who plays for the Sikkim women's football team. Last year she came by with a small wooden trophy she won — simple thing, barely carved, but she asked me to fix a chipped corner. People talk about 'women in sport' like it's some big policy debate, but I just see a girl who needs a third practice session on the gravel ground behind the market. Whatever keeps her out there running, that's what matters.

A third practice session on that gravel ground—that's more real than any committee report I've read. Some of my girls walk two kilometres to school just to stay in the game; the ones who fall, they get up faster than the policy makers ever will. Eidi seirem, that's all it takes.
